A 1994 American musical drama film that was animated, titled The Lion King, was created by Walt Disney Feature Animation and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The Lion King, an African film about a kingdom of lions, tells the tale of Simba, a lion cub whose Swahili name means "lion," who will replace his father, Mufasa as ruler of the Pride Lands. However, after Simba's paternal uncle Scar kills Mufasa to take the kingdom, Simba is deceived into believing he is to blame and leaves for exile. Before facing Scar to end his tyranny and assume his position in the Circle of Life as the rightful king, Simba, who grew up with the carefree outsiders Timon and Pumbaa, gains insightful advice from his childhood friend Nala and his shaman, Rafiki. On June 15, 1994, The Lion King was released, and its soundtrack, plot, themes, and animation won praise from critics. Posters with imaginative depictions of far-off places and animals became more prevalent after the development of computerized effects in the 1990s. It remained relatively traditional, though, with the photographic backdrops, slogans at the top, and the names of the leading actors. Several iconic movie covers still known today were truly inspired by new computer software and all the thrilling possibilities it offered. The first 2D animations were created throughout this decade, primarily utilizing computer-animated production systems. What unfolded in the 1990s had a lasting impact on graphic design trends that emerged in the next two decades, acting as a major source of inspiration.
