United Artists Records 45rpm Sleeve

8

Between 1970-1980, United Artists Records began using a logo composed of an abstracted capital “UA” made of negative space surrounded by a solid rectangular block of color.

On this sleeve, the designer created a pattern based on the elements of the logo, except this time, the “U” and “A” were made of the positive color of deep red. It contrasts quite well with the standard logo encased within the LP label.

Seemingly chaotic, the design ultimately causes the eye to converge in the middle, where the song title “In Maztlan” by WAR is advertised in a sans serif text.

The paradoxical chaos and order of the repeated patterns makes for a memorable 45rpm sleeve, even if it is simply a company sleeve, made to be manufactured in bulk.
