Heathen was released in the United States on June 11, 2002 as his 23rd studio album. While writing the album, personal events that occurred in 2000 and 2001 affected Bowie deeply and influenced some of his writing. He wanted this album to be more serious, reflecting a personal and cultural “restoration.” Bowie wrote these songs in the Looking Glass Studios in New York around the time of 9/11, and many of his songs can allude to the post-tragedy atmosphere. Bowie hired the photographer who took the cover photo of his wife’s autobiography, Markus Klinko, and the photo was digitally enhanced by Klinko’s partner. The editing of Bowie’s eyes reflect an alien and transcendent feel that is captured in the music. Bowie hired Jonathan Barnbrook to create the upside-down typeface to resemble the writings of Jacques Derrida.
