USPS 1980 Olympics Commemorative Stamps
Released by the USPS, this set of 4 stamps commemorate the 1980’s Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, New York, USA. Featured are two of the four stamps from this collection, highlighting Speed Skating and Downhill Skiing, two of the ten sports that were competed at the event. The other two stamps highlighted Hockey and Ski Jump. These designs take major inspiration from Herbert Matter’s iconic Swiss tourism posters, highlighting a singular subject and using strong diagonals to activate the design. However, instead of photomontage, these stamps are fully illustrated in flat color which better suits the small scale of these objects.
