Cold Mountain

“What we have lost will never be returned to us.” - Charles Frazier

From award winner Charles Frazier comes one of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory. Cold Mountain is a masterpiece filled with adventure and a vivid evocation of America during the Civil War. This jacket composition represents the large expanse of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. This adaptive photograph creates a generalized depiction of the novel's described landscape and allows the delicate typography to stand out amongst the monochromatic blues. There is a clear sense of hierarchy not only in the image but also in the text. The stark black coloring at the bottom provides a grounding for the viewer's eyes to rest before continuing to turn the page. This particular edition is a perfect example of modern design with a great use of photography as a compositional element.
