Utagawa Kunisada, the author of this work, was the leading Ukiyo-e artist in the 19th century, late Edo period. He is said to create the most ukiyo-e artworks in his life. This is portrait of a woman making up with a magnifying glass. Utamaro established the style of portraiting women with a magnifying glass, and Utagawa Kunishida followed it. The woman in this portrait is a geisha who is a woman who entertained the hosts with traditional entertainment at banquets. She wears a simple striped robe which those in the Fukugawa section of Edo, today's Koto city, favored.
