Illinois State's Gamma Phi Circus dates to 1926, and is the oldest collegiate circus in the United States and one of only two still in existence. Bloomington-Normal has a rich circus history going back to the 1880s, and served for decades as the winter home for several nationally known performers. It began as the Gamma Phi fraternity, founded in 1929 by ISU gymnastics instructor Clifford "Pop" Horton. The fraternity's first circus performance took place in 1931.
Gamma Phi has established itself as a unique performance troupe, supporting acrobatic and circus arts in higher education, and continuing the legacy of circus history in the state of Illinois.
