Heralds were a popular form of advertising in the late 19th and early 20th centuries announcing the arrival of a circus. This herald is announcing the arrival of Batty's circus at Astley's Royal Amphitheatre in London, England, on December 13, 1847.
Performers in this circus include Dr. Syntax, Lavater Lee, and Monsieur Masotta. Acts included were “Batty's Brilliant Scenes of the Circle”, “Camp of Silesia! Or, the Gispsy Queen”, “Dr. Syntax and his dapper grey mare”, and “Whitefarm, or the assassin labourer.” These acts were arena theatre, equestrian drama, horse arenas, horse sports, horses, and pantomime.
This herald was made by letterpress printing on paper (black and white) in London, England.
