Zapotec Weaving - Textiles

1

This traditional textiles piece is made in the style of the Zapotec's weaving style.  Typically made using wool, in modern times cotton and silk is used as well. This type of textile method was founded in Mexico and is used to make rugs, mats, and other interior-decor (such as hanging-wall rugs).

This particular rug was found in a locally-owned shop (Commercial Drive, Downtown Vancouver) run by this Mexican lady who sells a lot of traditional Mexican and other Hispanic-cultured items.

In Mexican culture the concept of life, death, and the afterlife is relevant in many celebrations and ceremonies - hence this common theme of skeletons and nature co-existing in one across the art can be seen.
