Enamel Advertising Sign for Exide Batteries.
The Exide battery was designed specifically as the ideal portable power for new electric vehicles that started to appear at the turn of the century. The name Exide is a combination of the words Excellent Oxide.
Electric power represented around one third of all road vehicles in Europe and North America in the early 1900s. Steam power was slightly higher and gas was least popular. Horsedrawn vehicles for hire were rapidly being replaced by electric cabs in major cities such as London, Paris, Berlin and New York.
Internal combustion engine driven cars became more popular a decade or two later when petrol became cheaper and more readily available. And now, we are going back to electric!
