With cotton being a high-demand product in the Charlotte area, it attracted a lot of visitors who were looking to stay within the area. This brought an opportunity for business to start and prosper, capitalizing on this material. In the 1900s, Joseph Benjamin Ivey was amongst the folks who took this opportunity and started his business called Ivey's. Ivey's first started off as a small dry goods store and later evolved into a chain of department stores that began selling high-end clothing and hardware. Ivey's was such a high-end store that people considered it "first class." Ivey's department store was built in 1924, located at the intersection of N. Tryon Street and West 5th.
These 1982 Ivey's ads showcase the reason why Ivey's is in a different league compared to the other department stores. The overall composition consists of typography and photography. With their model being the placed in the rule-of-thirds, giving the entire composition an attractive aesthetic. Along with the attraction, the models are never looking towards the camera and have a sense of determination and boldness with their body expressions. With the rest of the space, a small section is dedicated to the description of the fit that the model is currently wearing.
