In the wake of the Women's Suffrage Movement and the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920, the League of Women Voters was formed. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization whose mission is to improve the government by educating and encouraging active participation in the political process. When the organization began assembling in Charlotte in 1947, one of their first projects was to work at understanding the state of governance in the growing urban city. For five years, the League of Women Voters of Charlotte worked closely with public officials and representatives of special agencies to create a survey of how Charlotte citizens lived and were governed. After the research, a small book was published to inform and educate the locals about their government.
