80s punk posters

4

In the 1980s the punk subculture utilized “diy-dadaist” themes and techniques in their underground poster art. The dada influences come through in the use of photomontage and evocative imagery/symbolism. For more underground bands (subcultures within the subculture), most of the posters would have been created by the bandmembers themselves and friends of the group. Because of this, many of the artists are unknown and few signed their posters. Because members of the subculture didn't necissarily have access to the fancy printing and design resources of their mainstream counterparts, they created this diy style that combined illustration and collage. John Holmstrom is a wellknown punk underground cartoonist and was the creator of Punk Magazine. While none of the above posters were designed by him, the community utilized many of the same themes and stylistic elements he did.
