My Marie-Antoinette Valentine

2

Henry Clive was an Australian born but American based illustrator and graphic designer. He was particularly known for his illustrations in American Weekly.

The American Weekly was a Sunday newspaper supplement published by the Hearst Corporation from November 1, 1896, until 1966.

What is it?

This is a painting of Marie-Antoinette which was the cover of American Weekly on July 23rd, 1933.

Where did you find it?

On an auction website, Heritage Auctions.

Why is this something that should be part of the archive?

It is a great example of graphic design and art as a whole in the 30’s. Lots of 1930’s art featured women, displayed mostly sexually.
