The New Yorker published its first magazine on February 21, 1925, and since then has released roughly 4559 (47 annually) unique magazine covers each week. This specific cover, illustrated by artist Barry Blitt, recreates the iconic WWII V-J Day in Times Square captured by Alfred Eisenstaedt. This controversial cover pictures two men embracing in a kiss, rather than the heterosexual pair pictured in the original photograph. The New Yorker has maintained the same typeface for 97 years of publishing.
