The Political Thought of James Forman

1685
"Shortly after Carl Smith helped to get the Detroit Printing Co-op up and running, he and Michael Hamlin printed thousands of copies of The Political Thought of James Forman there. It was the first—and most ambitious—book published by Black Star Publishing. They typeset the pages at Black Star, and did the actual printing on the Co-op press, as the print job was too big for the Black Star press.6The print quality throughout is a bit uneven. The ink is not distributed evenly across a page, or the plate was not fully straight on the page—evidence that the machine was difficult to use, and that Smith and Hamlin were new to printing. The artwork on the cover of the book is by Aaron Ibn Pori Pitts, a printmaker and painter who would go on to form Black Graphics International."
