Malayalam writing has developed through manuscript traditions before being well adapted to printed typography. Palm-leaf manuscripts were built through the materials and writing tools that were used, and this influenced spacing and arrangement of Malayalam letters.
Since the letters were written by incising them into a surface, the physical properties of the material did affect how the script was created. Almost to how vellum shaped the production and appearance of European manuscripts, palm leaves shaped how Malayalam could be recorded and reproduced.
