In this groundbreaking type-driven music video for Talking Heads, Kalman (the commissioned designer) dropped words and sentences on the musicians like flowers and wrapped text across their faces for what design critic Steven Heller called a "closed-caption" effect.
Though the actual message of the song goes against the production method entirely, through what some would call “a satirical take”. The song's lyrics focus on modern consumerism and how we as humans are reluctant to give up modern comforts for environmental preservation. Kalman takes this idea and applies it via computer-made imagery (Not AI). It's almost funny, as the piece itself is such an interesting take on environmental preservation; it takes a non-traditional approach, creating naturalistic elements like flowers, flowing waterfalls, and wind, turning them into projection mapped symbols.
The irony of it all is that while Talking Heads, as a collective, have a brand to uphold, they completely abandon their own beliefs for creative exploration. This reason is why its such an important upload to the design archive. Without the need to push beyound our beliefs we as humans wont grow. Which makes me wonder; did the Talking Heads abandon their beliefs or did they open up new paths to exploring them?
