This is a work by Katsui Mitsuo 勝井三雄, which won the 7th Kamekura Yusaku Award in 2004. The poster vividly illustrates the intersection of the human vision system and digital technology, presenting how it is only noticeable that the image is a collection of tiny pixels when one comes closer to the image.
Katsui Mitsuo was born in Tokyo in 1931, graduated from the Tokyo University of Education. After becoming independent in 1961, he lead major projects in Japan, serving art director for events such as Expo '70 in Osaka and the Okinawa International Ocean Exposition (Expo '75). When plate-making technology shifted from chemical to digital processes in the 1980s, Mitsuo was also the one who was quick to recognize the potential of computer graphics and began working with it. He was a designer who focused especially on digital expressions of light and color within the Japanese design industry.
