龍の子太郎 "Taro the Dragon Boy"
This is the advertising poster for 龍の子太郎 (Taro the Dragon Boy) a Japanese musical from 1991 designed by the Graphic Designer Kohei Sugiura. The play was staged at the Tsumura Family Aoyama Theatre by the Japan Children's Welfare Association's Children's Castle, which adapted a classic Japanese folktale about a boy whose mother transforms into a dragon.
The musical poster uses a rich gold background contrasting a bright red serpentine-like dragon that curls around the boy over blue cloud like waves. Vertical Japanese type featuring the musical's name, 龍の子太郎, runs along the left side, and the composition is framed by small icons that play as registration marks in each corner, which is a recurring device in Sugiura's design work. The piece reflects Sugiura's broader practice of researching and blending traditional Japanese visual motifs (myth, folklore, calligraphic type) with a structured sense of composition.
