Shusei Nagaoka was born November 26, 1936, in Nagasaki, Japan. He grew up during World War II, his family had evacuated from Nagasaki before the atomic bombing. During post- war recovery, he would read and draw from science fiction books and Photography books. These shaped his themes to futuristic and sci-fi illustrations. 

This album cover was made for the band Earth, Wind & Fire. They were a key point to his success with Western music artist beginning his career. The cover blends Egyptian temples with pyramid-shaped space station and hidden Sino Japanese kanji, capturing the bands Afrofuturist fusion of ancient mysticism and futuristic exploration.
