This booklet examines El Lissitzky’s 1923 typography manifesto and where it holds up versus where it breaks — his insistence on optics over phonetics undercut by his own later admissions. It then argues that variable fonts and accessibility settings finally deliver the reader-responsive “new book” Lissitzky imagined but couldn’t build.
