This is a work for the Ueno zoo, created in 1994, by one of the most influential graphic designer Kazumasa Nagai.
Originally renowned as a master of sharp, geometric abstraction, Nagai underwent a profound stylistic shift in the late 1980s, transitioning toward hand-drawn motifs centered on the themes of life, nature, and the raw energy of living creatures. This poster is a prime example of that evolution. The mysterious, radiant red creature is not a depiction of a zoo animal, but a simple symbol of life and the energy of nature. In front of a deep blue background, its innocent gaze and the vivid red color, convey a powerful message about vitality, wonder, and vulnerability of existence. Printed by silkscreen, the ink density and rich textures represent Japanese cultural poster design, showing harmony between Nagai’s organic vision and craftsmanship.
