The NASA "worm" logo was a type of modernist word mark created for NASA in 1975 by designers Richard Danne and Bruce Blackburn. The "worm," which used to be an official NASA logo from 1976 through 1992, was developed as a design-based approach to create a simple, modern and future-oriented branding system. The lettering of the worm has been reduced and cleaned up (the letters have no bars over the "a"), giving it a technological feel and suggesting a moving forward into the unknown, yet still providing excellent readability. In their history and brand guide, NASA explains how this logo worked with the rest of NASA's graphics system and how it represented what NASA did during its time.
