Xutos & Pontapés - "Cerco" Album Cover

1

The cover for the album Cerco, released in November 1985 by the label Dansa do Som, was designed by João Luís Dória, who also served as the photographer. This work utilizes a high-contrast photographic technique on offset print, characterized by a stark absence of mid-tones that creates a gritty, urban texture. The iconic red "X" was applied as a bold, overlapping graphic element, creating a powerful chromatic contrast that defines the band's visual identity. This design integrates the raw aesthetic of the 1980s post-punk scene, moving away from traditional band portraits to focus on symbolic communication. The composition explores a minimalist yet aggressive layout where the distorted perspective of the background captures the rebellious spirit of Portuguese rock, effectively turning the red "X" into a standalone logo that remains one of the most recognizable artifacts in Portuguese music history.
