Description
The Portus Cale Gold & Blue collection uses patterns inspired by traditional Portuguese blue-and-white ceramic tiles (azulejos). The packaging combines Portuguese historical references with a contemporary luxury aesthetic.
The products are characterized by:
- ornamental repeating patterns,
- elegant typography,
- dominant cobalt blue and gold colors,
- premium finishes aimed at the international gift and home décor market.
The design became one of the most recognizable examples of contemporary Portuguese packaging associated with cultural tourism and the “Made in Portugal” identity.
Historical Context
Castelbel was founded in 1999 in Castêlo da Maia, near Porto, initially as a handcrafted scented soap manufacturer. The company later expanded into home fragrance and luxury bath products while developing a strong Portuguese visual identity.
The Portus Cale line appeared around 2005–2006 as Castelbel’s premium brand, designed with a more international and contemporary image.
In 2015, the Gold & Blue collection was launched as a tribute to traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles.
