Rainbow Factory - Fanmade Video for the series My Little Pony

The history and significance of fan culture often go unnoticed, as we tend to prioritize “original” ideas, even though most are shaped by what came before. Fans are driven by strong emotional connections and engage with media in creative ways by producing art, writing, fashion, and more. To be a fan is to be an enthusiast and share some amount of devotion to either a celebrity, character, or work, and many choose to show their love through crafting something physical or something that can be revisited. 

The kids' show, My Little Pony, may have some of the most devoted fans, especially when it was streaming in the early 2010s. The Fandom consisted of most likely young pre-teens and adult millennials who thought the show was more than a kids’ show. There is a lot of discourse about whether adults should be into a show that is made for children, since the adult fanbase was usually adult men who were into a show created for young girls. 

This video was made by two men who, in the fanbase, were referred to as “bronies”, a word combining “bro” and “pony”. It was a music video with the intention of giving my little pony a dark fan-made plot line. The video itself is made to resemble the animation of the real show, which made it look canon and often tricked young fans into thinking it was a part of the show. The music could be classified as electronic with a dark atmosphere, which later became more popularized by the band The Living Tombstone, who also created a fan-made song based on a My Little Pony character.
