All American Girl Baseball League Metal Sign
This program shows how women in sports have been represented through graphic design across different time periods, revealing attitudes toward gender, athleticism, and equal representation. It shows how design both reflects and influences social values, revealing overlooked histories of female athletes and how their visibility in media and public imagery has shifted over time.
These programs are examples of the materials created during the year when the All American Girls Professional Baseball League was in peak attendance and attracted over 910,00 fans. The ink was printed in one color with heavy-duty 24 gauge steel. The corner holes provide easy access for hanging. The illustration displays a typical player about to swing the bat. The player is clothed in the league’s uniform, consisting of a one-piece, short-skirted flared tunic with a team patch in the center of the chest. The uniform is accessorized with a matching hat and knee-high stockings. Two different types of typography are used: one script typeface to touch on the femininity of the AAGPBL, and sans serif fonts to emphasize the year and highlight that this league is professional.
