The flag depicts 13 stars, meant to call back to NYS being one of the original 13 colonies, along with the 13 flashes of lightning representing that Buffalo was one of the first cities to provide electric service widely. The seal in the center contains a lighthouse and a boat, representing Buffalo's important spot as a trade center on Lake Erie and the Erie Canal. The flag design is critical in representing the city's history and graphic design impact.
