Inflammatory Essays I

4

Artist/ political activist Jenny Holzer created  Inflammatory Essays from 1977-1982. The brightly coloured lithograph prints were displayed throughout New York neighbourhoods and contain bold and contradicting statements, exploring themes of power, social control, violence and consumerism. Despite bring over 40 years old, Inflammatory Essays are just as thought provoking and resonant today. This particular essay stood out to me for its candid depiction of how fear is used to control people, a concept that continues to feel relevant in ongoing discussion about censorship and injustice.
