Popular Mechanics May 1955

While published after the war, this issue continues to encourage American patriotism and pride in the military, having a military seaplane as its front cover image. The article featuring the seaplane is about the “Mobile ‘Dry Dock’” that can beach a sea plane. The magazine itself is filled with ads for tools and materials, stories of great men and information on how things work, capturing the capitalistic, individualistic and inventive attitudes of the 1950s. The subtitle “Have we sent a rocket into space?” give a glimpse into the coming space age as people anticipate and speculate on the possibility of human spaceflight. The cover art was likely done by.Frank Beatty, the art director. This magazine was purchased at a flea market at MIT.
