To Kill a Mockingbird

4

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a highly controversial book, frequently banned in schools across the US since its release in 1960. Generally, the book has been challenged for its racism, offensive language, and violence. More specifically, the book has been banned in schools for highlighting a white savior's perspective, discussing sensitive subjects like rape, and its frequent use of the N-word. To Kill a Mockingbird invites social discomfort and has been incredibly divisive as a result. Some argue it’s important to hold space for those difficult discussions; others argue it creates a hostile environment for black students in school. This specific version of the book is the first edition with the original cover art from the first printing. The dust jacket cover art was designed by Shirley Smith.
