1984

4

George Orwell’s 1984 is one of the most consistently banned and challenged books in history. At the time of its release, it was incredibly divisive, banned in the USSR for being anti-communist and banned in the US for being pro-communist. The book was received as sexually explicit and anti-government. Many people thought it would result in young people learning to distrust authority and government power. Ironically this led to the censorship of a book that actively critiqued the ills of a highly censored society. Today, the book is revered as a warning against totalitarian regimes’s and their constant surveillance, suppression of ideas, and use of propaganda to manipulate people. This specific 1962 reprint cover is arguably the most printed version of the book. The art was designed by Germano Facetti and features a photo of Big Brother’s eyeball at the end of a tunnel.
