Hurrah, the Butter is Gone!
John Heartfield was a pioneer of political photomontage. He was a German artist and member of the Berlin Dada movement. Heartfield studied art and design at the Royal Arts and Crafts School in Munich where he developed skilled in graphic design and visual composition. Hurrah, the Butter is All Gone! created in 1935, depicts a family eating metal objects instead of food, satirizing Nazi propagranda that prioritized weapons over basic human needs. This piece was published on the front page of AIZ. Because his work has a strong anti- Nazi stance, he was forced to flee Germany in the 1930's. Heartfield used photomontage as a tool for political critique and anti-fascist activism.
