Petticoat Osen: A Tale of Forgetfulness

8

This is a poster that was made for Jokyo Gekijo's  performance of the Petticoat Osen is a part of Tadanori Yokoo's playful and subversive approach to design. He used bright and vibrant colors, using real photographs of people. This poster is very interesting because it is basically a collage of a lot of things going on. The bright hues and dynamic composition channels the emotions and energy of Edo-period kabuki theater. However, it is a representative of an experimental artistic style with western imagery, including Japanese motifs, symbols and photgraphy, creating a combination of avant-garde, consumer culture, as well as everyday objects.
