About / Biographic Information:
Chaz Maviyane-Davies began his career as a trainee draughtsman in Zimbabwe before training as a graphic designer in London, where he earned an MA from the Central School of Art and Design. His work is driven by a necessity for "profound social change," often using surrealist notions to address themes of politics, culture, and human rights. He views graphic design as a tool to fight discrimination and communicate the extent of social injustice.
The "Election Aftermath" cover for MOTO magazine was created in 1985 following the national elections in Zimbabwe.
Description:
This powerful magazine cover illustrates the "Election Aftermath" with a visceral, hand-drawn graphic of a hand gripping a bottle that is exploding with blood-like red splatters. The imagery serves as a direct commentary on the political violence or volatility following the 1985 Zimbabwean elections. The bold, stencil-like typography of the magazine's title, "MOTO," is positioned at the top, while the date "August 1985" and the headline "Election aftermath" are integrated into the chaotic, expressive composition.
