Pits and Perverts Poster

19

This is a poster for the Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners event called Pits and Perverts at the Camden Electric Ballroom in London. This was part of the historic movement combining the fight against queer oppression and miner's union suppression during the 80's. Margaret Thatcher and the government she ran was using the police to harass unions and gay people alike, so Mark Ashton founded Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners to show solidarity. The two communities would be called ‘Pits and Perverts’ by Thatcher supporting articles, and so they reclaimed the title for the fundraising concert. The success of the concert led to more acceptance of queer people as the larger group of miner's would support them in kind for their advocacy. This poster is part of gay and labor movement history in Britain.
