The B-52's, Wild Planet

1

The B-52's second studio album Wild Planet (1980) featured art direction by Robert Waldrop and photography by Lynn Goldsmith on the 12-inch vinyl LP sleeve. Though it was released during the rise of American new wave, Wild Planet brought a unique punk energy with a surf-rock sound. The B-52's were odd and campy, celebrating queer culture and identity, as well as challenging the narrative of rock being "masculine." The album cover features a unique blend of graphic design and photography, resembling pop art or post-modernism. The typography plays a supportive role, letting the bright red dominate. The photograph of the band fits firmly in the middle of the design hierarchy. The album cover reflects the band’s new wave kitschy energy.
