Visual Identity for Meiji Gakuin University by Kashiwa Sato

4

Kashiwa Sato is a leading Japanese creative director and CEO of SAMURAI. After graduating from Tama Art University and working at Hakuhodo, he founded SAMURAI in 2000.

As a “total producer,” he directs brand strategy across visual, spatial, and communication design, working on major projects for UNIQLO, Rakuten Group, and Seven-Eleven Japan. His work has received international recognition, and his 2021 exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo, demonstrated his strong influence on contemporary Japanese design.

In 2006, he developed the branding for Meiji Gakuin University, creating a university identity that combines the letters “M” and “G” with the school’s yellow color to convey clarity and prestige. He also designed campus environments, including a cafe, tableware, and menus. This pioneering university identity project in Japan gained attention for addressing declining student applications amid Japan’s decreasing birthrate.
