Narita Airport Press Vol. 28, Spring 1998

10

The artist, Toru Kaichi, is a professional illustrator, character designer, and artist. His works often evoke nostalgia while still being contemporary and humorous. In this artwork the scene he went for is cheerful European-style townscape with colorful houses, people waving, a hot air balloon shaped like a soccer ball, a violinist, a red airplane in the sky, and cats in the garden. The retro-modern illustration trend linked Japan to international movements in graphic design, while still expressing a unique cultural warmth.
