Landscape with Madonna, 2002

33

A kneeling female figure dominates the print—her pink skin outlined in crisp black, white bikini slipping from shoulder to hip as she curls cat-like atop a deep-blue shoreline. Behind her, a sunset sky grades from molten crimson to pale gold, capped by ink-dark mountains and an erupting Mount Fuji that spits rainbow-striped smoke. Slender yellow prayer slips float vertically across the horizon, while hand-written calligraphy winds over the woman’s body like tattoos of overheard gossip. At left, a cameo portrait of a tuxedoed Western man hovers in a round mirror above a bold red hibiscus bloom. The collision of Edo-era ukiyo-e motifs, erotic pop surrealism, and day-glow color gives the scene a playful yet subversive charge, oscillating between traditional iconography and psychedelic satire.
