Expo 2020 Dubai Wayfinding
The 2020 World Expo in Dubai featured a unique wayfinding system designed by Spaceagency. The signage utilized elements of Al Sadu weaving to combine the traditional Bedouin culture with the cutting edge vibe of the exposition itself. The signage was framed with steel and then rope was strung across the frame to create a loom. Fabric with informational type and pictograms was then woven into the rope to create the signs. General information was on off white fabric and each theme of the expo was color coded. At night the signs were backlit to create a lantern effect.
Additionally, the pictograms used for the signs were designed in collaboration with a studio in Dubai called Tinkah. They aimed to combine internationally recognized icons with Arabic calligraphy. To do so they took pieces of Arabic letterforms and rearranged them into the shape of the pictograms.
