It was released by Sega in 1985 as an arcade racing game.  It used  16-bit graphics and was one of the first games to use it. Yu Suzuki, a game designer at Sega, created the game. It was his second game that he programed. He took inspiration from the world champion Freddie Spencer using how he raced as a base for the game.  It got very popular at launch being the highest grossing arcade game of 1985 in the US
