Palestine. Multifunction typeface design.

This artwork was designed by Ruben Fontana. Ruben is a professor in Argentina that teaches typography in fun, unique ways such as instructing students to observe a leaf and then draw it from memory. These teaching techniques were about the design process and laid the groundwork for modern typography classes in Argentina.

This artwork, made in 2008, was created in support of the Palestine font designed by Ruben. The individual patterns, spacings, and symbols directly translate into a code of type where these same symbols have several uses as a typographic language.

In more ways than one, all designs have a codified language to them, including the patterns on a quilt or the visual imagery on a war propaganda poster. There are numerous differences between a codified, designed artwork and a war propaganda poster depicting a picture perfect family. However, what unites them is the subtext, the hidden, unobtrusive visual rhetoric that manages to elicit emotion and send messages to the viewer.
