Latin American Lettering
This mural shows Elliot Tupac's mix of old Peruvian chicha poster style with new street art methods. Made in Lima city, the work shows Tupac's skill with letters. "Street Art Latino" is the main text in the middle. It has many bright shapes and symbols that show both native and modern culture. The mural was made for a project to make the neighborhood better and to celebrate Latin American art. Tupac made this work using his special way of painting by hand and also using stencils. He used very bright colors—pink, blue, yellow, and green—that come from folk art “with an ethnic vide and strong conscience-oriented messages with a much more urban style”. Besides looking good, this mural is part of Tupac's goal to bring old Peruvian folk art into today's world. He makes public art that connects cultural history with modern ideas. The detailed patterns and flowing designs refer to both ancient pre-Columbian art and modern Latin American symbols. This creates a visual link between old and new times.
“Elliot has redefined both a traditional art form and what it means to be a lettering artist in his native Peru.”
