Gidra NewspaperCover, March 1970, Vol. II No. 3

744

Gidra newspaper was a student-run monthly publication from Asian American students at UCLA. It ran from 1969 to 1974, sharing a wide range of topics including contemporary issues and Asian history.

The cover of this issue features a woman guerilla fighter holding her baby, a booklet, and a gun across her lap. A topic often addressed by the newspaper and a hot topic for America as a whole during this time was our country's involvement in the Vietnam War. The woman has a very fierce and determined look on her face that expresses that she would do anything to protect her child which is a sentiment strengthened by the gun she is holding as well. No matter what side they were on, Vietnamese women were under threat and mistreated by soldiers, so this cover shows the strength and courage they possess as well as calls on support from others.
