Independant Living Banner

815

This banner uses bold lettering to advocate for disabled people's right to live independantly in community style homes, rather than the inhumane institutions they have been forced to inhabit for centuries (disabilityrightsca.org). They've been placed in the fringes of society to forgotten, but they're trying to regain some humanity by working together to change legislation.

The Banner itself employs not only large, bold lettering, but also the use of a fist pumping from a spoked wheel. The wheel is surely meant to represent that of a wheelchair, a common icon for the representation of disabled peoples. The fist is a popular illustration of civil rights, used most noteably in women's rights and Black lives matter. Without reading the text, the viewer understands that these people are standing up for disability rights.

The two carrying the banner are Doug Brown and Gene Turitz, founders of Center for Independent Living’s Van Modification Shop. This day marks the Peoples’ Civil Rights Day March and Rally in San Francisco.
