Boycott Grapes, Support the United Farm Workers Union

844

This poster was by Xavier Viramontes in 1973 in response to a new grape boycott initiated by César Chávez. Viramontes used the imagery of the Aztec warrior squeezing “blood” from the grapes as a reference to the violent actions from the Teamsters. This poster was initially deemed too graphic for the United Farmworkers to sell, but was sold as a print via mail order through the UFW newspaper, El Malcriado.  This work raised awareness to the mistreatment of farmworkers and provided a call to action for the community.
