Teen Look Magazine Cover by Satsuko Okamoto, 1960s

Teen Look was a Japanese fashion magazine for high school girls produced weekly in the late 1960s and 70s. As Japan was influenced by Western culture and design trends around the world, its covers featured dynamic illustrations of teen girls in trendy outfits very fitting for the time, like the girl on the right. The Western influence was so strong that many of the girls featured had a wide variety of hair colors. Some covers featured traditional Japanese clothes, but the trends were still integrated using color and pattern, like the kimono the girl on the left is wearing.

Satsuko Okamoto was an illustrator and a stage costume designer, providing the perfect background to illustrate so many covers for the fashion magazine. Her style combines the look of older Japanese artwork with blocks of color similar to woodblock printing and the modernist style of this era of curving lines, bright colors, and patterns.
