Historietas de Elpidio Valdes

Elpidio Valdes is a cartoon character featured in comic shorts and strips of the same name. Cartoonist and filmmaker, Juan Padron, an important figure in the Cuban film animation industry during the 1970s created Elpidio for the Cuban youth to learn about anti-colonial history.

The character, himself, is a peasant Mambi colonel fighting for the liberation of his homeland from imperialistic Spain in the 1890s. The comic highlights his many experiences as he ranks up and survives the end of the war.

The book cover gives details of what it is about through its imagery. On the surface level, there is what can presumably be Elpidio Valdes fighting with his swords and guns indicating its theme of revolution. The cartoon style helps determine its target audience to a more youthful generation. The design is hand-drawn, expressive, and folk-art-driven, the opposite of the corporate/branding style of capitalism.
